Power supply types
HLG
HLG power supplies are the highest quality power supplies in the range. Passively cooled and solidly built with IP67 moisture protection. HLG power supplies work very well with LED controllers, are quiet and therefore always the first choice when it comes to LED installations.
SLIMLINE
Slimline power supplies are used when on-site installation conditions do not allow high-quality HLG power supplies. They are extremely slim and flat, but more susceptible to noise (whistling, buzzing) as soon as an LED controller or dimmer is connected downstream.
RS power supplies
RS power supplies are open power supplies, which are installed in larger housings, e.g. together with pixel controllers or similar.
LPV, TABLE and PLUG POWER SUPPLIES
These are simple power supplies for rather small installations without LED controllers or dimmers. In combination with controllers or dimmers, these tend, like all inexpensive power supplies, to produce noise (whistling, buzzing). If possible, use high-quality HLG power supplies here.
Tip:
LED-Studien advises against the use of dimmable power supplies when operating LEDs! The only exception are PWM power supplies, which directly output a pulsed PWM signal (pulse width modulation) and thus enable convenient brightness control. PWM is the standard for precise dimming of LEDs. Dimmable power supplies from the ELG or HLG series, however, work without PWM! Dimming works there only conditionally and generally requires to go up to the power limit of the power supply, which is however unfavorable for the life span of the power supply. Dimming down to 0, i.e. OFF, is not possible at all with these power supplies. This only works with PWM power supplies or with a downstream controller, like our LK55 series.
