LED Dimmer / Driver
To dim your LED lighting you need so-called LED driver, such as our universal driver of the LK55 series.
Depending on the installation, you only need a small LK55-2 radio dimmer or the larger variants LK55 or LK55-8 - all listed under CV Driver. These are then accompanied by a selection of classic hand-held remote controls and models for recessed or wall mounting. These include flat pushbuttons, knobs and touch panels. All controls communicate wirelessly with the LK55 LED dimmers, so no additional cable connection is required. Furthermore, a WLAN solution is available with the LK35-8, so you can additionally control your lighting via smartphone or tablet.
A more detailed explanation of the LK55 series can be found below.
Handheld remote controls
Classic handheld remote controls for LK55 and LK35 drivers. Some models are also suitable for multi-zone control. I.e. only 1 remote control can control different drivers separately.
Radio wall controls
For LK55 and LK35 driver. Partly with multi-zone control. Some models have their own battery supply, others are supplied via 230V (i.e. without battery).
LK55 Driver CV
Dimmer for controlling LED strips and other components with constant voltage.
LK55 Driver AC
AC dimmer with phase cut control via a TRIAC for normal 230V lamps and luminaires. Please always check if your lamp or luminaire is also dimmable via phase cut.
The universal LK55 Driver
The universal driver/receiver of the LK55 series can be used for any kind of LED installation. The LK55 driver/receiver is always connected between the power supply and the LED lighting (e.g. LED strips).
The LK55 driver always includes a remote control, which you use to control the LK55. Depending on the choice of remote control, the LK55 driver then enables:
- a pure brightness control (LED dimmer)
- a combined brightness and color temperature control (COLOR TEMPERATURE from warm white to cool white)
- a combined brightness and effect color control (RGB or RGBW)
Range:
The radio does not require visual contact and has a range of up to 25m in free field. It also works through lightweight walls, such as plasterboard, through wood, etc.. However, solid walls made of (steel) concrete and thick masonry can block the radio.
These videos show the functions and setup with LK55 driver as LED-only dimmers:
Mini-LED-Dimmer
For smaller LED installations with a few meters of LED tape, our mini LED dimmer is suitable.
Excursus: Separate LED dimmers or dimmable power supplies?
An alternative to a separate LED dimmer, such as the LK55, are directly dimmable power supplies. This alternative is certainly attractive, since the separate LED dimmer can be saved and a power supply unit is needed anyway. So why not just use a dimmable power supply?
In general, LED Studies advises against dimmable power supplies! In the best case, you can dim the LEDs to a limited extent at most.
Dimmable power supplies on LED strips WITH built-in constant current sources (KSQ)
In modern LED strips with built-in constant current sources (CCS), dimming via power supply usually works only inadequately. The constant current sources on the strip ensure optimal operation of the LEDs, uniform brightness over the entire length of the strip and allow longer installations without power re-supply. If the voltage is now reduced by means of a dimmable power supply, the KSQs compensate for this to a certain extent and the brightness remains the same. If the voltage is too low at some point, the LEDs dim down very quickly. Precise dimming is thus only possible to a limited extent. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
Dimmable power supplies on LED strips WITHOUT built-in constant current sources (KSQ)
For LED strips without constant current sources, dimming via power supply is only possible to a limited extent and it also only works halfway acceptable (e.g. up to at least 30% brightness) if the power supply is exhausted to its power limit. However, this operation at the power limit also increases the heat generation at the power supply immensely and thus reduces the service life. In general, LED-Studien recommends to use the power supplies only up to 90% of the power limit. The control with a dimmable power supply would completely contradict this recommendation and therefore we advise the solution with a separate LED dimmer.
A separate LED dimmer allows in contrast to dimmable power supplies:
- The continuous dimming of the LEDs from 100% to 0% brightness (i.e. switched off).
- The safe operation of the power supplies well below the power limit and thus a long service life
- The combination with very many variants of radio controls, also for wall mounting
